Trapper's of Starved Rock held their Black Powder Shoot & Rendezvous on October 6 & 7, 2007 at Sioux Passage County Park, North St. Louis County, Missouri. With record heat, these brave men, women and kids managed to survive the weekend sleeping in tents and cooking on open fires.

What a gun!

This is a 137 caliber, or a 1 3/8 inch bore barrel, flint lock rifle and shoots a 1 3/8 inch round lead ball.

Actually, it's a converted cannon.

Shooting this baby was quite an experience to watch. The kick had to be extremely hard. They were shooting at a target on the ground. It only looks like they were shooting into the air. It took a stout man to remain on his feet. This would be a great gun, if we were still hunting the Mastodon.

Other shooters gathered to try their aim at standard targets with conventional rifles.

At times, the firing line will be shut down while targets are maintained or replaced. Safety is a strong issue at any shooting match.

Okay, you hit him. Now, how do you skin a cast iron fox.
The winners of the competition. All that practice finally paid off.

Also, throwing the hawk and knife is part of the competition. Sometimes, this can be even tougher then shooting.
